SPOTLIGHTING ALUMNI
1. You joined ASM in Grade 3 and stayed all the way through Grade 12. When you look back on those ten years, how do you think you changed and grew as a person and as a student?
Looking back on my 10 years at ASM, I’ve grown a lot as both a person and a student. I became more confident, independent, and responsible. I learned how to overcome challenges, manage my time efficiently, and work with others. ASM helped shape who I am today, and I’m grateful for all the experiences and friendships I’ve made along the way, especially because I’m still close with many of the same friends I made when I first joined in Grade 3.
2. Having spent so many years at ASM, what do you remember most about the school community, your teachers and the friendships you made along the way?
I remember and cherish the moments when we all as a group would hang out together on break, whether that be from when we were younger playing tag in the yard or when we were older going to the supermarket together. I also remember that the teachers were always supportive and helped me grow both academically and personally, as they always helped no matter what, making us feel safe and seen.
3. During the COVID-19 period, you adapted particularly well to online learning. What helped you stay motivated, engaged and connected during such an unusual period, and did you learn anything about yourself from that experience?
During COVID I saw that it was important to have some sort of routine to help get through the days, similar to how a school day would be but just online and from home, and at the points when it got tough I would ask my friends for help and ask what they would do in that position. I learned how to be more independent and responsible with my schoolwork on my own and be able to get through unexpected and difficult scenarios.
4. You spent much of your education learning and communicating in English. How has that shaped your confidence with the language, and how important is English in your life, studies or work today?
Since I was born in the US, English has always been a big part of my life, but studying at ASM helped me become even more confident in communicating with others. English is especially important to me as I work as a receptionist on river cruises in Europe, where I interact with guests from different countries every day. Being comfortable speaking English has helped me connect with people and communicate with them professionally.
5. Are there any skills, values or habits that you developed during your years at ASM that you appreciate more now than you did while you were a student?
Working on group projects at ASM definitely helped me develop skills that I appreciate more now. In my current job, I work with people from different backgrounds and cultures, and I’m able to communicate with them easily both in speaking and in writing, solve problems together, and find solutions that benefit everyone without creating unnecessary conflict.
6. If you could speak to your Grade 3 self on the first day at ASM – or to a student just beginning their ASM journey today – what would you tell them?
I would tell myself to enjoy every moment and make the most of my time at ASM because the years go by, and they go by fast. Don’t be afraid to try new things, make mistakes, or even step outside your comfort zone. Most importantly, appreciate the friendships you make along the way, because some of those friendships might still be by your side many years later.
